Norrin is no longer Galactus’ herald and spends his time saving planets instead of marking them for death, with a view to make up for previous transgressions. That’s right, in the identical vein as t Norrin Radd aka Silver Surfer, the loneliest, most tragic figure within the Marvel Universe. As Galactus the world-eater’s herald, the Surfer travels the cosmos for brand spanking new worlds for his grasp to devour. Oh the ache! The misery! The angst!!
Ehhhhh… nope – not anymore! Enter: the brand new, fun-loving All-New Silver Surfer!
Norrin is now not Galactus’ herald and spends his time saving planets instead of marking them for demise, with the intention to make up for previous transgressions. That’s proper, in the identical vein as the other All-New Marvel NOW! vary, Silver Surfer joins Magneto, Black Widow and Loki as a former villain turned good – although really he’s better as he was pressured into doing what he did!
On this first volume, Spider-Man author Dan Slott and FF artist Michael Allred join forces to take advantage of entertaining, delightful model of Silver Surfer captain america civil war t shirt lyrics there’s ever been. Tonally it’s a bit like Physician Who and who joins the Physician on his adventures A sassy lady buddy – enter: Daybreak Greenwood.
Dawn’s a brand new creation who’s mainly there to make Surfer a bit less distant to readers. She keeps him grounded in a metaphorical sense (they fly around in every single place on a magic board in any case!) so he doesn’t get a lot inside his personal head and starts bewailing the lives he’s taken in the service of large purple hat.
In this inaugural volume, Norrin and Dawn are requested to save an enormous planet-sized pleasure resort known as the Impericon, and must face their worst fears by the hands of Nightmare. Without stepping into spoilers, there are two predominant ideas driving this series. The primary is the tagline: “Anywhere and In all places – Grasp On!” and the second is the idea that every thing is possible; and each are also the 2 story arcs in this e-book. Which is pretty damn ingenious!
Actually, Dawn was the one weak link of the book. Her inclusion appears totally arbitrary and, out of nowhere, she’s thrown together with Norrin right into a pressured relationship – properly, they’re not there but however you understand that’s on the cards. And the truth that she has a twin who went travelling world wide whereas she stayed residence in Cape Cod as a result of her dad’s B&B is the most effective place on the planet, why depart after which she goes to see the galaxy – the irony was just a wee bit overstated and kinda cheesy.
However she has some good moments too like naming his board Toomie (after Surfer’s refrain “To me, my board!”) and the prison break scene was fun. She doesn’t know Norrin’s previous yet so I’m certain that’ll put a captain america civil war t shirt lyrics damper on their burgeoning romance (“Why do they name you Harold, Norrin ”). I also like that the board is a character itself, like the magic carpet in Disney’s Aladdin.
The Guardians of the Galaxy have a fun cameo as do Physician Unusual and Hulk, and Norrin’s interactions with all of them made me sad that Marvel don’t personal the film rights to Silver Surfer (damn you, Fox!) so we won’t get to see the Surfer/Hulk battle in this e-book on the big display screen.
Slott’s writing is nice but Allred’s art makes this e-book for me. I’ve always loved his work however his art in Silver Surfer is excellent. At the 2013 Comedian-Con when Marvel have been unveiling all of their forthcoming titles, it was Allred’s cover of Silver Surfer #1 that had the most distinct look out of all of the comics on show. His Spidey-esque eyes are surprisingly expressive and his wife Laura’s colours, particularly using blue, are a superb choice to make the Surfer stand out.
There’s a stunning and ridiculously detailed splash page of the Impericon early on that appears like a tub of Lego bricks spilled out onto the page, and i loved how he chose to depict all potential futures in a single picture: a toy monkey that smashes cymbals repeatedly! He attracts the Guardians, Strange and Hulk rather well too, so when he’s achieved on Surfer, I hope Marvel put him on any of those titles next! I could go on and on about Allred but I’ll leave it there – he and Laura are an unbelievable artwork workforce and their work on this e-book is exemplary.
I love that there’s no distinction between writer and artist – both Dan Slott and Michael Allred are credited collectively as “storytellers”. And so they did create a fantastic story collectively. Their Silver Surfer is likely one of the should-learn titles of the second wave of Marvel NOW! and may even be one of the best version of the character so far. It’s a very enjoyable guide with amazing artwork that’s undoubtedly price testing if you happen to enjoy superhero comics that don’t take themselves too significantly!
